    Super Food Super Facts: Coconut Oil

    It’s possibly my favourite ‘SUPERFOOD’ probably because it’s a total contradiction, like me and it’s surprisingly amazing, like me!

    All fats are not equal: Coconut oil is solid at room temperature which means that it’s a saturated fat, yes 90% saturated fat – “What!” I hear you say. But this is not your ordinary saturated fat, this is MCTs, medium chain triglycerides which metabolises differently providing instant energy and can have therapeutic effects on several brain disorders!

    All calories are not equal: The MCTs in coconut oil have been shown to increase 24hr energy expenditure by as much as 5% that means you could burn about 120 calories per day by just swapping your cooking oil! Amazingly it seems to like abdominal cavity fat in particular.

    It’s a killer!: When coconut oil is digested it forms monolaurin a truly amazing substance that kills the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus and the yeast Candida Albican

    Studies have also showed that MCTs also kill hunger! The fatty acid in coconut oil can significantly reduce appetite.

    heart_coconutGood for the heart: Coconut oil has been proven to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad) and raise HDL cholesterol (the good) and improved blood coagulation factors and antioxidant status.

    Good for the brain: MCTs has been shown to increase ketone bodies in blood levels and improve brain function in patients with mild Alzheimer’s.

    Not just for eating: Coconut oil can improve moisture and lipid content of hair and skin. It is also an effective factor 20 sunscreen and mouthwash!

    So next time you’re out shopping pick up a jar of virgin organic coconut oil (not the refined rubbish), you can also get it on Amazon.
